Photo showing the 'S' break below the big break.
Both the lower bones in the leg broke.
The circle in this image shows the smaller break, which is just left to heal on its own.
The knee is cut open, and the metal rod is pushed down the inside of the bone, where the bone marrow is. Then the rod is attached to the bone with bolts.
The little white circles are the staples to close the outside of the wounds where the bolts and rod were inserted.
Metal staples are removed with a special little tool, easy, easy.
These were removed on week 5 for my 1st checkup. (Staying 250km from Bloemfontein, the doctor gave me the ok to extend the time before my first visit. - Thanks.)
At Orthopedics.za.net - on the pictures page, you'll see the X-rays taken of a broken leg. The x-rays show the break, once it was fixed a day later, the 5 weeks follow-up and then the 12 weeks check-up.
At the 12 weeks/3 months check-up, this is where you get the thumbs up to throw the crutches away. I see this as the "run Forest, run" moment.
